LANSING, MI —The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Tau Omega Chapter, have collected and donated nearly 1,600 pairs of shoes this year on behalf of Soles 4 Souls, a non-profit organization that processes and ships shoes to destinations around the world populated with people of color.

The Soles 4 Souls shoe collection project is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. international community service program, Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service. Since 2018, Alpha Kappa Alpha members around the globe have partnered with Soles 4 Souls in support of the sorority’s Global Impact Target. This Target focuses on community service programming designed to broaden and enhance its global footprint.

Delta Tau Omega Chapter, under the leadership of Mrs. Sharon Rogers, President, has diligently worked with Mrs. LaVerne Duncan-Mickel, Global Impact Chairman, to collect shoes by providing an opportunity for chapter members and members of the sorority, as well as family and friends, to clean their closets of new and gently used shoes in an effort to effectuate change around the globe.

President Sharon Rogers states “Helping where we can help has always been what AKA members do. This is no exception. It has been rewarding to collect shoes over these years knowing they will make a difference in a life, whether it’s the life of a person who would wear the shoes or a business owner who would sell the shoes. Since 2018, we have been fortunate to collect nearly 3,000 pairs of shoes.” Chairman LaVerne Duncan-Mickel adds, “Excellence and community service is a great part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s legacy on which we stand. We reach back and help those less fortunate. Our partnership, both locally and internationally, is making a difference world-wide. I am so proud and happy to have been a part of this successful collaboration.”
