Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon is calling it quits. She announced her retirement yesterday. It’s effective Dec. 31st.
Siemon will be leaving office midway through her second term in office. In her retirement announcement, the 66-year-old Siemon simply said she “plans to move on to the next stage of my life.”
She would make no further comment on her motivation for leaving early from her job as prosecutor.
It was just a few weeks ago, The Chronicle News reported that an Ingham County Judge was calling for Siemon to resign. Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was unhappy with what she viewed as overly lenient plea bargain deals with killers and other criminals. Siemon didn’t agree with the judge’s assessment.
As a progressive reformer, Siemon got resistance to her policies on offering plea deals to everyone, including people charged with murder. She also got 'flak' for her handling of sexual assault cases involving MSU athletes, and for her policy of not charging gun and drug offenses that stemmed from traffic stops.
