Schor Picks New Police Chief

Interim Chief Robert Backus selected to lead LPD

LANSING, Mich. – Mayor Andy Schor announced that he has selected Lansing Police Department Interim Chief Robert Backus to serve as Lansing’s next Chief of Police. Backus has been with the Lansing Police Department for over 24 years, most recently serving as Assistant Chief for the past two years.

“Chief Backus has been an incredible leader within the LPD ranks for years. When we needed an Assistant Chief, he stepped up and took on some big projects, and honed his leadership skills. He also shares my deep concern and vision for getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them, and for keeping our community safer,” Schor stated. “Rob has dedicated his career to serving Lansing, and he truly cares about this city. I know he will be a great leader for LPD.”

Backus started his law enforcement career with the Lansing Police Department as an Explorer at the age of fifteen. He was hired as an LPD cadet in 1999, and was sworn in as a police officer after completing the 67th Mid-Michigan Police Academy in 2000. In his career at the Lansing Police Department, Backus has worked special assignments in Internal Affairs, the Violent Crime Initiative, Tri-County Metro Narcotics and Special Operations, in addition to his assignments to the Patrol Division as an officer, sergeant and lieutenant. As a captain, Backus oversaw the Administrative Services Division, Staff Services, and Investigations. He has also served in volunteer roles within the department such as Police Explorer Post Advisor, Police Benevolent Association President, and as both supervisory and non-supervisory union representative.

A graduate of Michigan State University’s Criminal Justice program with a bachelor’s degree, Backus also holds a Master of Science degree from Ferris State University in Criminal Justice Administration. He completed Michigan State University’s School of Staff and Command, Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police, and the FBI National Academy Session #282

“I am honored that the Mayor put his trust in me to serve as Lansing’s next Police Chief. I appreciate the opportunity and am excited for the future and look forward to serving the Lansing community and our department personnel,” Interim Chief Backus said.

Schor will now forward his recommendation to the Lansing Police Board of Commissioners for their approval.
