It is possible that by day's end, the ability of any two adult Americans to marry will be the law of the land! *(All adults except a parent and his/her progeny).
The House is set to give final approval today to legislation protecting same-sex marriages in federal law, a monumental step in the decades-long battle for nationwide recognition of such unions. It reflects a stunning turnaround in societal attitudes.
A law requiring all states to recognize same-sex marriages would come as a relief for hundreds of thousands of couples who have married since the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision that legalized those marriages nationwide.
The bipartisan legislation, known as the "Respect for Marriage Act," would also protect interracial unions by requiring states to recognize legal marriages regardless of “sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin.”
President Biden says he's a strong backer of the bill and promises to “promptly and proudly” sign it into law. That signing 'could' come as early as later today.
Democrats have moved the bill quickly through the House and Senate motivated by the Supreme Court’s decision in late June that overturned the federal right to an abortion. That ruling included a concurring opinion from Justice Clarence Thomas suggesting that same-sex marriage should also be reconsidered.
