President Biden is expected to announce next week his support for making the African Union a permanent member of the G-20 a highly influential forum for the world's most powerful economies. Membership in the group has been a long-sought goal of African nations.
White House officials say Biden's announcement will come during the US/Africa Leaders Summit in Washington next week.
It is hoped this step could make it easier to secure the cooperation of African nations on issues ranging from climate change to support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Currently, South Africa is the only member of the G-20 from the continent, joining participants from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The African Union represents the 55 countries on the continent.
