LANSING, MICHIGAN — Over 40 renters and tenants gathered on Wednesday evening to share “horror stories” about housing conditions in Lansing.  The gathering provided a vital platform for tenants to share their experiences with skyrocketing rents, inadequate living conditions, and mistreatment from landlords, fostering solidarity among community members.

Lansing Rent Is Too Damn High, the host of the event, called on state legislators to pass a suite of Renters’ Rights bills, including the Tenant Empowerment Package sponsored by Senator Sarah Anthony and the Tenants' Right to Council bill sponsored by Representative Emily Dievendorf.

“This event clearly articulated the frustration experienced by renters in the Lansing area,” said Ross Fisher, a tenant union leader from Lansing Rent Is Too Damn High. “Our fellow tenants in Lansing are faced with substandard conditions, bad water, and discriminatory practices. What we heard here makes it all the more clear that we need our legislature to take immediate action.”

The event featured food and childcare to ensure accessibility for all participants, further encouraging involvement from families and individuals affected by the housing crisis.

Tenant leaders were interviewed by the press, emphasizing the importance of ongoing advocacy for tenant rights and the necessity of systemic change in the Lansing housing market.

For those who missed the event, there are ongoing efforts to address these issues.

The Rent is Too Damn High coalition meets every other Wednesday night at the Fledge, 1300 Eureka St., with the next general membership meeting happening on Wednesday, October 30. The coalition is preparing for a significant action on Wednesday, November 13at the state Capitol in Lansing, holding lawmakers accountable for passing housing-related legislation during the lame duck session.
