Lansing Selected for Love Your Block, Bringing $70,000 for Resident-Led Neighborhood Projects

LANSING, Mich. — The City of Lansing has been selected to join Love Your Block, a national initiative led by the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University that supports resident-led neighborhood improvement projects.
Lansing is one of 25 local governments from 20 states chosen for the latest round of the program. The city will receive $70,000 to support projects that can include clearing vacant lots, reclaiming public spaces and other community-led improvements. Lansing will also receive expert support and a dedicated Love Your Block Fellow.
Mayor Andy Schor said the city’s Department of Neighborhoods, Arts, and Citizen Engagement helped guide the application process and said he is looking forward to seeing which neighborhood projects emerge from the program.
The City of Lansing said Love Your Block is intended to bring residents directly into neighborhood problem-solving while strengthening relationships between local government and the communities it serves.
Since the program began in 2009, Love Your Block has worked with 50 local governments and more than 88,000 residents across 33 states, according to the City of Lansing’s announcement. Participating communities have removed millions of pounds of trash, cleaned graffiti, created public art and transformed shared public spaces.
Lansing joins communities including Albuquerque, Birmingham, Chattanooga, Honolulu, Jersey City, Mobile, Newark and Tulsa in the newest group of participating cities.
