Three students died and five others were injured in the shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., according to campus police.
The suspect in the shooting, identified by police as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Mr. McRae had no apparent affiliation with the university and police have no idea why he came to campus and opened fire. Police said they have recovered at least one weapon used in the attack. The five people who were injured, four of whom required surgery, are in critical condition at a local hospital.
"This truly has been a nightmare we're living tonight," said Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the campus police department.
In response to the shooting, MSU announced it would close campus for the next 48 hours. This includes athletics, classes, and campus-related activities.
