Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan to hold community event Aug. 28


Public invited to honor the legacy of Dr. King at the March on Washington anniversary event

LANSING, Mich. – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan invites the community to come together on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024, to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Dr. King's historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This free event, open to all, will be a powerful tribute to Dr. King's enduring legacy and the ongoing struggle for equality, diversity, and social justice.


Event details:

Date: Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Location: March begins at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI


Event schedule:

5:30 p.m. – March staging at the Lansing Center

6 p.m. – March to the State Capitol Building begins

6:20 p.m. – Program on the Capitol steps

7 p.m. – Movie screening on the Capitol Lawn


The evening will also feature voter registration opportunities, a reflection on Dr. King's monumental "I Have a Dream" speech, and a movie to inspire awareness.


“As an organization dedicated to promoting equality, diversity, and social justice, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan continues to focus on pressing issues in our community,” said Elaine Hardy, MLK Commission chair. “This event is an extension of that mission, where citizens of all ages can join together in this march to honor the past and inspire the future.”
