DETROIT, Mich. – Today, the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, which has proudly served Detroit's faith community for over 50 years, announced its statement of support for Elissa Slotkin for U.S. Senate. The support of the Council, which represents more than 100 African-American churches throughout the Detroit area, is the latest sign of growing momentum for Slotkin within Michigan’s faith community.

The Council has served as the voice of countless church attendees in Detroit. They continue to empower congregations through a focus on leadership, support, development, and spiritual education.

"Detroit demands effective representation in Washington, and having seen Elissa Slotkin’s dedication to the city over the last year, we know she is the right leader we need in this hour," said Pastor Richard White III, President of Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit & Vicinity. “Now more than ever, we need leadership not only qualified, but dedicated to creating opportunities for everyone, stabilizing our neighborhoods, and ensuring safer communities for our youth. As a Member of Congress, Elissa has demonstrated her commitment to prioritizing her constituents and her vision for progress includes meaningful engagement with our faith-based communities. We believe her Opportunity Agenda, developed after countless meetings with neighborhood leaders, community activists, minority entrepreneurs, educational administrators, and faith leaders, demonstrates her commitment to faithfully advocating and representing all segments of the district and state she represents. With her determination and skill, Elissa Slotkin will help move our city and state forward. She’s the right choice for Detroiters and all of Michigan.” “

I am so grateful for this support from the Council of Baptist Pastors,” said Slotkin. “When I launched my campaign, the first place I started was Detroit, and I’ve held over 100 events and meetings there since – because I know it's on me to show up, introduce myself, listen, and keep coming back. I’m particularly honored to have the Council’s endorsement after the substantive, meaningful conversations we’ve had about the challenges facing Detroit. From the very beginning, I have benefitted from their input, feedback, and help in crafting the Opportunity Agenda, which lays out exactly what I would focus on in Detroit if I am lucky enough to be elected. Our campaign has never taken any individual or community for granted, because I understand that it’s on me to win the trust, respect, and support of voters in Detroit and across Michigan.”The new support also comes weeks after Slotkin hosted her second Opportunity Agenda event in Flint, where she discussed her priorities to help eliminate barriers to economic opportunities in Michigan’s urban communities. To date, Slotkin has held over 100 events and meetings in Detroit and has been endorsed by more than 40 community leaders and elected officials across the city. Over 200 elected officials, community leaders, and faith representatives from across Michigan have announced their support for Slotkin in the U.S. Senate race.

Detroit-based leaders who have endorsed Slotkin’s campaign include former Detroit Mayor Dave Bing as well as former Detroit City Council President Saunteel Jenkins, Michigan Black Business Alliance President and CEO Charity Dean, Detroit City Council Member Fred Durhal III, and Detroit District 7 Police Commissioner Ricardo Moore, among others.U.S. Reps. Haley Stevens, Hillary Scholten, Dan Kildee, and Jamie Raskin have all backed Slotkin, as well as national organizations including Planned Parenthood Action Fund, EMILYs List, Reproductive Freedom for All, the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare PACVoteVets, End Citizens United / Let America Vote, GIFFORDS, the Brady Campaign, and Foreign Policy for America
