A Russian court has said “Nyet” (No) to Brittney Griner’s appeal of her 9-year prison term on drug charges.
That rejection of the American basketball star’s appeal came earlier today with the state prosecutor calling the sentence “fair.”
The 32-year-old Griner was convicted in August of smuggling and possessing cannabis oil.
Griner’s Russian lawyer argued during today’s hearing that her sentence was ‘out of line’ with Russia’s criminal law.
Today’s appeal rejection is the end of the Russian legal process for Griner. And so, other than some kind of prisoner swap with the U.S., she’ll have to spend the next 8 years in Russia locked up.
