REVEREND DR. KAY L. PORTER


REVEREND DR. KAY L. PORTER, a product of Lansing’s Public Schools, attended Trinity A.M.E. Church, and she became a pillar in the Greater Lansing community. As a child, she was a member of Collins Memorial Church where she sang her first solo at three. Growing in Christ she was only eleven when she taught her first Sunday school lesson, and she was the youngest member of the Senior Choir when she was in Junior High School as a first soprano. As you can see, she was always groomed to be a dedicated child of God. So by the time she was twenty-five, she was made Sunday School Superintendent.

Dr. Porter received the call to ministry in November 1992, and she accepted the call for the African Methodist Episcopal Church on January 20, 2007. Some of the ministries that she has been associated with have included: Associate Minister of Trinity A.M.E. Church, member of the Steward Board, Director of Christian Education, Director of the Youth Choir, Sunday School Teacher for Pre-School and Beginner Class, member of the Women of Worth Ministry, member of Trinity Mass Choir, Vacation Bible School Teacher/Administrator, etc. Currently, Rev. Dr. Porter’s community involvement and organizational affiliations have included: The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Lansing Board, Lansing Police Department Advisory Board, Greater Lansing Urban League, Lansing Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, Black Child and Family Institute, Michigan Minority Health Coalition, Lansing Latino Health Alliance Board, Greater Lansing Area Commission on Race and Diversity, Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Lansing Area Public Purchasing Group, American Red Cross Mid-Michigan Chapter for Diversity, the Council of Asian Public Americans, and The Greater Lansing Clergy Forum. She became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on June 11, 2006.

Dr. Porter holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Human Services from Lansing Community College, Associates in Early Childhood Development, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Spring Arbor University in Business Administration/Human Resource Management and a Master of Arts Degree from Spring Arbor University in Organizational Management. She has obtained a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan in June 2014. She was ordained Itinerant Elder of the African Methodist Church on August 14, 2014, and received her appointment by the Rt. Rev. John R. Bryant, Presiding Prelate, and Senior Bishop of the 4th Episcopal District as Pastor for St. Matthew A.M.E. Church in Lansing, MI. Dr. Porter is the proud parent of four children and thirteen grandchildren. They are dedicated members of St. Matthew’s A.M.E. Church. She has been a passionate teacher to her students in church, church school and schools of education, and in their walk in life. God has helped her overcome many of life’s challenges.
